Information for Teachers about the Headwise Meditation Program for Teachers
Headwise Meditation Program for Teachers
What is Headwise?
Headwise is a simple but effective four week course that teaches students how to manage their stress or anxiety. Mindfulness is a form of meditation that has grown in popularity in the last five years. Many schools are using mindfulness to help students improve their concentration and focus in the classroom.
How does it work?
This online course can be completed by students both at home or in school. In school, we believe teachers should encourage students to practice their mindfulness exercises at the start of a class or project. Simply ask the students to login to the course on their laptop or tablet and listen to the particular course module you want them to practice. It really is that simple. Some exercises only take about three minutes to complete, so they will not interfere too much with your schedule.
How does mindfulness benefit teachers?
Children who practice mindfulness regularly have longer attention spans, better focus, and are less likely to be confrontational in class. Teenagers who learn to regulate their emotions through mindfulness seldom need to be corrected in class, allowing you to concentrate on your lesson plan.
How do I track a student’s progress on the
course?
Teachers have access to our control panel, so you can see how many students have completed each week. When a student finishes their course, teachers can print out their Mindfulness certificate and award it to the student.
Who created the program?
David Kavanagh is a well-known systemic family therapist who has many years of experience working with teenagers. David created the program to help young people feel more in control of their emotions. He has also created an eight week program for teachers which you can access at www.mindfulnessexercises.ie. Teachers have complimentary access to the mindfulness course.
How can I help my students with the Headwise program, outside of class?
Some of the exercises that students will be asked to complete include mindful walking and mindful eating. In these exercises, you may see students walking outside slowly, in circles, or eating a piece of chocolate or fruit very slowly, so don’t interrupt them- it’s all part of the program.
Does Mindfulness work?
The evidence for the effectiveness of Mindfulness is very encouraging. Once it’s practiced regularly, Mindfulness has been clinically proven to reduce anxiety and stress. Even more encouraging is the impact it has on sleep and concentration levels. Not only that, but we all know that teenagers are spending far too much time on their devices, and this program encourages young people to disconnect completely from technology and to start paying attention to what they are feeling and to what they are thinking.
